Explore the vibrant markets

Explore the colourful, bustling markets of mainland Ecuador and glimpse into a piece of their culture.  Ecuador is home to an assortment of people from different ethnic groups, which make this country a vibrant and fascinating place to navigate.  Tour the various markets and appreciate the local craftsmanship.  In Ecuador, you will find that very little is imported when it comes to crafts and artistry.  Certain neighbouring towns will dedicate themselves to a specific industry, such as silversmith and jewelry, wood work and luthiers, garments, and leather work.  Local markets serve as a hosting ground to buy and sell local artisans products.

Some of the most popular markets in mainland Ecuador are:

Otavalo Market:  One of the most well-known and popular markets of Ecuador, this local indigenous market is typically held on Wednesdays and Saturdays, however there are vendors there daily.  It is approximately a 2 hour drive from Quito.  Here you will find handmade goods, from jewelry, to woven tapestries, scarves, clothing, food, hammocks and more.  There is always something interesting to be found there.

Santa Clara Market:  Located in the heart of Quito, this bustling market is where the locals go to eat, purchase food and buy local wares.

Pujili Market: Located in the province of Cotopaxi, approximately a 2 hour drive from Quito, this small indigenous town is known for their ceramics and holds their market every Wednesday and Saturday.  Here you will find many locals buying food and produce, and local artisans selling their crafts and ceramics.

There are many more markets in Ecuador, including the Saquisili Market, Zumbahua Market, Guaranda Market, Guamote Market, Plaza de Las Flores Flower Market, Mercado 10 de Agosto  and not to mention our local Fish Market in Puerto Ayora.
